Imagine for a moment that people did not need environmental conditioning in order to be comfortable. Image that temperature and humidity had nothing to do with happiness, productivity, state-of-mind or even health.
Businesses would not need to spend tens of thousands of dollars on heating or cooling. In fact they would not even need a building. They could just set their employee’s desk in a field.
Think about a buffalo. Buffalo are perfectly happy doing their job in an unsheltered field. They don’t need heating or cooling to be productivity, healthy or, I must assume happy.
The problem is people are not like buffalo in any way. People, your employees, need to be comfortable in order to be productive, period. If you think the owner of your company installed 50-100 thousand dollars worth of equipment to provide temperature and humidity control because she is a nice person, you are wrong. She knows you will work faster, and more accurately if you are working in a properly control environment.
If is all about the money. The employees are expensive on-going costs. Heating and air conditioning are expensive once to have installed, but then far less expensive than even 1 or maybe 2 employees. That means, for all you number crunchers out there, that the return on investment for installing and maintaining heating and air conditioning is huge.
As a building owner you should consider your HVAC system as you do any other employee. It cost money to interviewee, hire and train a new employee. It cost money to provide benefits like health coverage, life protection and bonuses. Why would you think a mechanical system would be any different?
What if you could pay one persons very well, and as a result all the rest of your employees would work harder, faster and more accurately. All the rest of your employees would be happier, have fewer missed work days and stay with your company longer.
Would consider that to be a good investment?
Take care of your HVAC and it will take care of all your employees and customers. Don’t forget about the customer. The reason we are in business in the first place, to help a customer find a product or service that solves a problem.
All the way around, the story is the same. If you take care of your HVAC system they will take care of a host of issues you might be facing in your business.
- Product quality
- Productivity
- Absenteeism
- Turnover
- Office equipment operation
- Customer experience
- Work accuracy
- Protect investment
In summary, the HVAC system is no place to skimp on selection, installation or on-going maintenance. When your HVAC system is in trouble, you and your staff and your building are in trouble.
